Crate Digger Challenge
Pull five records from the crate. Each one hides a question about the sounds, scenes and stories of old school music. Takes two or three minutes.
How to play
- Choose today’s crate (the same five records for everyone, all day) or pick a crate by style.
- Each record reveals one question with four answers. Take your time: there’s no timer.
- After each answer you’ll see the right answer, a short explanation and a link to the guide that covers it.
- At the end you get a score, a rank and your finished crate.
Scoring
- 100 points for each correct answer. Wrong answers never cost points.
- Streak bonus: +25 for the second correct answer in a row, then +50 for each one after that. The best possible crate is 675.
- Ranks: New Collector (0–1 right), Crate Digger (2–3), Deep Digger (4) and Record Scholar (all 5).
- Badges for your first crate, a perfect crate, a three-in-a-row streak, finishing a daily crate and trying every crate.
The crates
- Soul & Motown: Detroit polish, Memphis grit and the gospel voices of the 1960s.
- Funk & Disco: The one, the bass lines, P-Funk, Philly and the road to the dance floor.
- Classic R&B: Philly soul, quiet storm, the Minneapolis sound and new jack swing.
- Mixed Old School: One record from every bin: soul, funk, R&B, early hip-hop and record care.
The game draws on 56 questions, and you won’t see the same question twice in a round. The daily crate never repeats the previous day’s records.
About the questions
Every question is written and fact-checked by our editors, and each links to the OlSkoolMusic guide it comes from. We avoid “greatest ever” debates and trick questions. The game uses no song clips, lyrics, album covers or artist photos; the records are drawn in code.
After some answers you may see an extra liner note. It’s written with AI help, using only our reviewed answer as its source, and is checked automatically before it appears. It never decides whether you were right or what you score. If it isn’t available, you still get the full reviewed explanation.
Your scores and badges are saved only in your own browser. There’s no account, and nothing about your game is sent to us. Clicking or buying anything never earns points or badges.
